WARFIGHTER WEDNESDAY – ETHAN MATTOX

October 28, 2026 – This month, Ignite is excited to recognize Ethan Mattox, Futures Analyst/Editor, who joined first Ignite through the Department of War (DoW) SkillBridge Program before accepting a full-time position with our Space Force team.

After serving seven years in the U.S. Air Force as an All-Source Intelligence Analyst, Ethan continues to support the Warfighter at Ignite. Drawing on his experience in intelligence, mission support, and dynamic operational environments, he helps identify future challenges and provide decision-makers with the insights they need to act.

A Distinguished Military Journey

Ethan served in the United States Air Force for seven years as a 1N0 All-Source Intelligence Analyst. His military career began at RAF Molesworth in the United Kingdom, where he worked on a watch floor during the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In that role, he briefed leaders ranging from immediate supervisors to the J2, requiring extensive preparation, vigilance, and transparency.

Ethan later moved to Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, where he served in several roles, including EUCOM Team Lead, Force Protection Analyst, Combat Intelligence Cell NCO, and NCOIC of Intelligence Training. These assignments broadened his experience and gave him his first opportunity to work in a deployed environment.

One experience in particular shaped Ethan’s understanding of the mission and his role in supporting it.

Before deploying, Ethan had been close to the mission through intelligence briefings, but he had not experienced it alongside the Warfighters carrying it out.

Stepping into a deployed environment and working alongside the Warfighters conducting missions based on the intelligence he had briefed gave him a new perspective on the importance of his work. The experience reinforced the collective purpose of intelligence analysts and the impact each individual has on mission success.

Personal Connection

Ethan credits his family with inspiring him to pursue military service. Growing up, his family moved frequently, giving him opportunities to see the world, experience different ways of life, and meet people from many backgrounds.

Those experiences made military service stand out as a unique path forward.

For Ethan, being a Warfighter meant understanding both the value he brought to the mission and the importance of remembering who he was and why he served.

Throughout his military career, there were difficult stretches when those beliefs were challenged. Remembering that he was serving something greater than himself helped him regain perspective and remain focused on the mission.

The lessons Ethan carried with him also stemmed from values his parents taught him. Two sayings, in particular, became especially meaningful throughout his service:

“Indecision is still a decision.”

Ethan learned that moments without an obvious path forward still required action. In intelligence analysis, hesitation could lead to undesirable outcomes, reinforcing the importance of making thoughtful assessments and moving forward.

Another lesson that stayed with him was, “All it takes is thirty seconds of courage.”

Naturally introverted, Ethan found that remembering his responsibility to communicate vital information to the right decision-makers helped him push past fear. He learned that he did not have to be fearless all the time to succeed, he simply had to find the courage to do what the mission required.

Transition to Ignite

Ethan joined Ignite through the DoW SkillBridge Program in July 2026. After completing the program, he accepted a full-time position as a Futures Analyst/Editor.

Transitioning out of the military was not an easy prospect at first. Ethan shared that he was uncomfortable with the idea of becoming a civilian because military service had provided him with a strong sense of purpose and stability.

However, discovering that Ignite was not only Warfighter-focused but also Warfighter-led helped him find that same sense of anticipation and eagerness he had experienced during his military service.

From his first days in the SkillBridge Program, Ethan was challenged, mentored, and educated about the civilian environment he was entering. He noted that this support came from multiple people, often without him having to ask, reflecting the culture and values that define Ignite.

His military experience also prepared him to navigate the changing demands of his work at Ignite. Throughout his Air Force career, he moved between different conflicts, assignments, and mission sets. That ability to adapt to new environments and grow through unfamiliar challenges continues to serve him well.

At Ignite, where new problems bring new challenges and changing circumstances, Ethan sees an opportunity to continue that growth in a new environment.

Lessons & Values

For Ethan, some of the most important lessons from military service were rooted in understanding personal responsibility, embracing courage, and recognizing the importance of serving something greater than oneself.

His experiences taught him that uncertainty should not prevent action and that fear does not have to stand in the way of doing what is necessary.

These values continue to shape how Ethan approaches his work at Ignite. His background in intelligence analysis reinforced the importance of making informed assessments, communicating clearly, and providing decision-makers with the information they need to address complex challenges.

What Does Being Part of a Warfighter-Focused, Warfighter-Led Company Mean to You?

For Ethan, joining a company led by and focused on the Warfighter helped him rediscover the sense of purpose he valued during his military service.

After initially feeling uncertain about transitioning to civilian life, he found that Ignite’s mission and culture offered an opportunity to continue contributing to something larger than himself.

That connection is especially meaningful as he moves into his role as a Futures Analyst/Editor.

Ethan explained that future analysis helps solve significant problems before they become significant challenges for the Warfighter. When a problem cannot be solved outright, the work can still help highlight it for decision-makers.

Advice to Those Currently Serving or Transitioning Out of the Military

When asked what advice he would give to those currently serving or preparing to transition into civilian life, Ethan emphasized understanding personal strengths, maintaining relationships, and taking the time to learn how to navigate the civilian sector.

His advice is straightforward:

Understand what you bring to the table, build and maintain your network, and do not lose touch with your military contacts. Just as importantly, educate yourself on how to navigate the civilian workforce—or find someone who can help guide you through the process.

Ethan’s own transition through the DoW SkillBridge Program illustrates the value of seeking mentorship, remaining open to learning, and finding an organization where military experience and mission-focused values continue to make a difference.

Ethan’s journey reflects Ignite’s commitment to helping Warfighters continue their mission beyond military service.

We are grateful to have Ethan on the Ignite team and look forward to the impact he will continue to make in support of the Warfighter.
